My step daughter has been wonderfully patient with me and allowing me to practice my portraiture skills. She has modeled professionally and acts as well and really makes it easy for me...I haven't received a bill yet fortunately :)

Edit: Per Paul's (Bellinger) request, the following is the technique used on this shot. To date I have strictly shot using natural/available light (I have been looking into renting studio time to try my hand at something different). I shot this in the early eve, shortly after 6pm (haven't adjusted the time on my camera to account for daylight savings) on an over cast day. These are my favorite conditions for the clouds act as a natural diffuser. The sun was setting to her right and behind and there is also a large oak tree behind further diffusing the light for the top of her head. No reflector was used, as it was I had to fstop down to limit glare on her face to retain skin details but still have highlights in her eyes and hair. Hope this is what you were looking for Paul. :)

Kevin is an incredible artist; his paintings look like photographs, his photography is dreamy and his tattoo work are works of art ~ I was lucky to have him as my art teacher many years ago. My mom photographed him 29 years ago...he hasn't changed much. He was gracious to let me shoot him on such short notice and on an incredibly hot day so I could catch him before his hair was cut for "Locks for Kids" ...yeah, he's got a huge heart too...

Transition II

As children we rush time, anxious to grow up and do what we want. Once adults we are too busy with life to see it passing us by. Then we wake up one day to discover we don't recognize the face in the mirror and struggle knowing we can no longer do all the things we once did. We are pushed aside by the up and coming, seemingly rendered useless over night. We can no longer see well enough to drive, it isn't safe to live in our home alone so we sell and move into a senior community. Some adjust well, making new friends. Others stay within finding it a struggle to start anew. Buddy is a WWII vet, toiled the land, worked with his hands, hunted, fished and roamed as he pleased...now he is, well, in transition...

Bullied

The effects of bullying can be serious and even fatal. It is still an area greatly under researched.

The link between bullying and school violence has attracted increasing attention since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. That year, two shotgun-wielding students, both of whom had been identified as gifted and who had been bullied for years, killed 13 people, wounded 24, and then committed suicide. A year later an analysis by officials at the U.S. Secret Service of 37 premeditated school shootings found that bullying, which some of the shooters described "in terms that approached torment," played a major role in more than two-thirds of the attacks. It is estimated that about 60-80% of children are bullied at school.

In a landmark study, 432 gifted students in 11 states of USA were studied for bullying. More than two-thirds of academically talented eighth-graders say they have been bullied at school and nearly one-third harbored violent thoughts as a result.

Mona O’Moore of the Anti-Bullying Centre at Trinity College in Dublin, has written, "There is a growing body of research which indicates that individuals, whether child or adult, who are persistently subjected to abusive behavior are at risk of stress related illness which can sometimes lead to suicide." Those who have been the targets of bullying can suffer from long term emotional and behavioral problems. Bullying can cause loneliness, depression, anxiety, lead to low self-esteem and increased susceptibility to illness. In the long term it can lead to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and an inability to form relationships.
